Woman of Grace

Hey Dolls,

This week RJ is paying tribute to an African- American woman who greatly influenced the 80’s, and that couldn’t be complete without mentioning the one and only Grace Jones.

Born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, Jones moved to Syracuse, New York at a young age and soon got into modeling, and I speak from experience when I say it’s quite hard to stay fly in all that snow (Go Orange!).

After getting a record deal and producing an album that flopped, Jones reinvented herself in the 80’s, sporting a short angular hairstyle and wearing many androgynous and often outlandish outfits. This makeover led to a chart-topping-album, numerous acting and modeling roles, extensive portraits by Andy Warhol, and a decade of Africa-American women rocking her hairstyle… as well as inspiration for  Lil Kim, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Nicki Minaj.

Redefining inner beauty? I’d say yes.
