Hello dolls! Tonight will bring about the season premiere of cycle 16 of America’s Next Top Model (yeah, it never gets old!), and what better way to celebrate than to honor the show’s creator, Tyra Banks, as RJ’s 90’s fashion and beauty icon.
Everyone knows that Tyra’s been modeling since she was 16, has her own talk show, and that the Top Model franchise is adapted in 40 different countries. One thing that Tyra Banks has always considered important is redefining what the industry considers beauty, and she’s always made being Black a big part of that.
Tyra was the first African American woman to be featured on the covers of GQ, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and the Victoria’s Secret Catalog; and when she hasn’t been getting into fights with Naomi Campbell, she used that momentum to start America’s Next Top Model. The show has not only introduced loads of African American girls into the modeling industry but also has shed a light on plus-sized and under 5’7” models. In addition, she has used her talk show to promote her look and feel good at any size campaign.
I’ve had the privilege to meet Ms. Banks in real life and I can tell you she is just as fierce and beautiful on the inside as she is on the out, and we can only hope that she’ll continue to inspire a broad definition of beauty for years to come.
